“The city, however, does not tell its past, but contains it like the lines of a hand, written in the corners of the streets, the gratings of the windows, the banisters of the steps, the antennae of the lightning roads, the poles of the flags, every segment marked in turn with scratches, indentations, scrolls”.

Italo Calvino, La Città Invisibile

“The soul of a city” is a project I hosted during one of my workshops on street photography.

I split the participants into groups, each focusing on one theme at a time to experiment specific techniques with a particular theme in mind.

The final result as a whole aimed to represent a specific city through its key elements:

  • Buildings and landmarks
  • People and habitants
  • Green spaces and natural elements
  • Public events
  • Street life (traffic, shops, pubs, bus stops, graffiti, etc.)

I did the same exercise along with my students and the pictures below are my personal representation of the soul of the city of Biel/Bienne (Switzerland)
